From the team that broke the news from Brussels of what the Windsor Framework means...

On Wednesday in the House of Commons following Prime Minister’s Questions, Rishi Sunak intends to subvert normal democratic Parliamentary processes and serve up the United Kingdom’s sovereignty on a silver platter to the EU Commission.

The PM plans to accomplish this by suppressing debate, denying access to important documents, refusing to appear in front of the European Scrutiny Committee, and employing a ‘Statutory Instrument’ (SI) to railroad a complex and wholly unsatisfactory deal through Parliament in an unholy rush.

The evidence for these assertions

Our important report today summarises evidence from the UK Government, politicians, a Parliamentary Committee, the House of Commons Library Research Service, the EU Council, and the EU Commission itself.

Here is what the House of Commons Library had to say about this yesterday, Fri 17 Mar 2023 :-

“The Government has announced that it will introduce secondary legislation to implement the Stormont Brake in the form of a Statutory Instrument (SI). A motion to approve the SI will be moved in the House of Commons on Wednesday 22 March, with a 90-minute debate beforehand. The Government has said that this debate and vote on passing the SI will serve as the opportunity for Parliament to show approval for the Framework as a whole.

Brexit Facts4EU.Org Summary

  • Misleading Parliament on 27 February 2023
  • Failing to substantiate his claims
  • Failing to provide important documents and evidence to MPs
  • Refusing to appear before the European Scrutiny Committee
  • Suppressing debate by allowing discussion of only one part of his new EU deal
  • Allowing only 90 minutes for MPs to debate this
  • Then railroading his whole deal through Parliament by using a Statutory Instrument on a vital matter

The DUP’s special committee has yet to report fully. Similarly the ERG’s ‘Star Chamber’ has yet to report. The European Scrutiny Committee has however raised serious concerns, which we reported on.

Proof that the Windsor Framework is ‘a done deal’ as far as the PM is concerned

On the morning of the day the Prime Minister plans to railroad his Windsor Framework through Parliament, the General Affairs Council of the European Union is meeting in the Europa building in Brussels. The meeting starts at 9.30am (8.30am UK time). The first two items on the agenda are :-

EU-UK relations

  1. Council Decision on the EU position to be taken in the Joint Consultative Working Group established under the EU-UK Withdrawal Agreement as regards the amendment of its rules of procedure. (Adoption)
  2. Council Decision on the EU position to be taken in the Joint Committee established under the EU-UK Withdrawal Agreement as regards a decision to be adopted, and recommendations and joint and unilateral declarations to be made. (Adoption)

There will be a fight by right-minded MPs, but Brussels thinks it has already won

Once adopted, these two decisions get taken forward to the full EU Council meeting on Thursday and Friday (23-24 March) for rubber-stamping.

In other words, many hours before the UK Parliament even has a chance to debate just one aspect of the PM’s deal with the EU Commission, the EU will already have taken its decision. It will then automatically be approved in full on Thursday or Friday. Once taken, these decisions are very rarely revisited. If forced to do so, the leaders of the EU27 are likely to feel antagonistic towards the UK.

So what will happen on Wednesday and why should you care?

Unless there is a major re-think by the Prime Minister and his team, on Wednesday a route will be followed that within the coming days and weeks will damage UK democracy and irrevocably damage the sovereignty of the United Kingdom.

In what some will see as a further indictment of the political class, the PM will see a majority for his deeply-flawed deal with the EU. Already - and despite not having seen the legal texts - the following parties have all said they will support the Government in the House of Commons on Wednesday: Labour, the SNP, and the LibDems. The Northern Ireland political parties Sinn Féin, Alliance, the Social Democratic and Labour Party, and the Ulster Unionists, have all said they broadly support the Framework.

Observations

The EU LOVES this deal - If that doesn't raise alarm bells for MPs, what will?

Make no mistake, the EU Commission, EU Parliament, and EU Council are all over the deal they've done with Rishi Sunak like flies on jam. Never known for moving at anything other than glacial speed, the EU is now rushing through all the legal necessities for making this sell-out deal a reality. As we have shown above, the General Council of the EU is set to approve everything before British MPs have even had the chance to have their say on one aspect of it - the only part they are allowed to comment on.

We suggest that all MPs should reflect very carefully on what we have just written. It simply isn't good enough at a later stage for them to say "Well, I didn't know." If they care at all about their reputation as Parliamentarians, this is the week to stand up.

Please stand tall and proud with us

In the early hours of the morning of Tuesday 28th February the Brexit Facts4EU.Org team became the first to break the news of what the Prime Minister’s secretive deal with the EU Commission really means. We did so following our repeated early warnings published throughout February.

Instead of simply listening to the Prime Minister in Parliament when he announced his 'Windsor Framework', we went to the EU Commission and all the documents they released shortly after the PM had finished addressing the House of Commons. These were in complete contrast to what the Prime Minister was saying in London.

All of our reports have now been vindicated. The only surprise left is that Rishi Sunak still seems to think he will not be severely damaged this week if he tries to proceed along his current path. This would represent a serious event in the political life of the United Kingdom and the repercussions are likely to bite him with a vengeance.

We must get reports like this out there

Reports like the one above take far longer to research, write and produce than many people realise. If they were easy, readers would see other organisations also producing these daily.

However, there’s little point in the Facts4EU.Org team working long hours, seven days-a-week, if we lack the resources to promote them effectively – to the public, to MPs, and to the media. This is where you come in, dear reader.
