129,000 rise in people employed in 12 months to April, says ONS and HMRC

And median monthly pay increased by 6.9% in the same period

Plus, employee growth for March has been revised upwards by 62,000

There are some encouraging statistics in the latest data released on Wednesday from the Office for National Statistics and the HMRC, although at the time of writing readers will be hard-pressed to find these on the BBC. The number of employed people rose by 129,000 in the year from April 2023.

In addition, monthly median pay rose by 6.9% compared with April 2023. Below we publish a Facts4EU.Org summary of the latest official data.

Why is the ONS always so gloomy - understating GDP and employment growth?

Once again the official figures for payrolled employment for the previous month of March have been revised upwards, as so often happens. These have risen by 62,000.

We are presenting the latest figures on employment for April but with the proviso that over and again we see these figures being adjusted upwards after the headlines have been reported in some media channels.

Observations

Given the global economic situation the latest data from the ONS and HMRC for the UK are encouraging.

The problem is that when these figures are adjusted upwards, they never make the news. We believe readers want to know the facts.

The initial estimates are used not only by the media but also by international organisations such as the OECD and the IMF. The corrections are never separately reported. We recommend that if the UK’s statistics organisations can’t get it right the first time, they wait until they can.

We must get reports like this out there

Reports like the one above take far longer to research, write and produce than many people realise. If they were easy, readers would see other organisations also producing these daily. Encouraging figures. Hopefully the downward trend on the last months of the graphs does not continue. The majority of job growth is in the public sector, mainly the health and social care sector.

Facts4EU has shared many articles in the last few months on how the public sector has ballooned over the last few years … I would not be surprised if most of the 129,000 rise in employment comes from the public sector … subsidised by the tax payer.

This is not what the ONS says !
It refers to the "health and social work sector" and the "education sector" but this is not the same as the public sector.

The NHS increased it's employees by approximately 70,000 in the calendar year, this leaves 100,000 extra employed in the private health sector. The UK private health sector is a very big employer which produces products and services, many which are exported all over the world. These are mostly well paid jobs which are good for the UK economy.

The public education sector has not seen a significant rise in employees. According to the Unions the number of employees has declined, which they say is due to too low salaries. So the 70,000 extra employed must have come from the private education sector which is a significant sector in the UK.

The fact that pay rises are still so high clearly suggests that other sectors are trying to retain and recruit new employees but finding it difficult. If the Government would take action to encourage more people back into employment then the figures would probably be much higher.

5 NH. the number of NHS employees has increased by 64,000 since April 23 but that is only up Jan 24, the latest NHS stats. That alone is 50% of the 129,000 published by the ONS. Add a bit more for public sector education and that is a majority in the public sector.

However both sectors do need go increase employment levels as they are doing. I suspect most of the new hobs, particularly in the health sector are being taken up by the record immigration levels since leaving the EU.

3 Northern Muppet … it looks like the unemployment figures in the UK are kept artificially low by the British taxpayers. This is disappointing as I was until now under the impression that our low unemployment was a benefit from Brexit … based on articles by Facts4EU in the last few months. If taxpayers stop subsidising/paying for low unemployment and an unproductive public sector … our unemployment rates will start to compare to those in the EU.

The actual gross job growth in the ONS figures is approximately 300,000 so the 70,000 (annual figure) in the public sector is only 23% of this. The net figure is lower because many employers can not find suitable people to employ, hence the large pay increases. The latest figures show there are still approximately 890,000 unfilled job vacancies so there is clearly a huge shortage of suitable willing employees. Obviously some sectors have been hit by the present economic conditions. For example the hospitality sector has been hit by high interest rates, high energy costs, increase in minimum wage, increase in costs of source materials and increased working from home. However job losses in this sector have been more than compensated for by increases in vacancies in other sectors.

This is complete nonsense. To pay for increased public sector employees you have to take money out of the private sector which reduces employment in the private sector. If employing more public sector workers eliminates unemployment without any economic consequences then no country would have any unemployment problems.
