On Monday, 21 Mar 2023, NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) released its latest annual report entitled “Defence expenditure of NATO countries (2014-2022)”. Every year Facts4EU punches the numbers and every year the UK comes out on top in Europe. Only the US spends more.

Once again the defence figures for 2022 from NATO put Brexit Britain on top, despite all the talk from the EU and countries such as Germany promising to do more.

Brexit Britain continues to defend the EU

In terms of financial commitment to the defence of Europe, the facts show that once again the United Kingdom is the leading military force amongst all European countries, spending $67.7bn last year.

This is almost $7bn more than Germany which has an economy 44% larger than the UK’s, and over $15bn more than Emmanuel Macron’s France.

When it comes to the heavy lifting, this is where the United Kingdom comes in. This is true figuratively and in practice.

For example in 2017 when Hurricane Irma hit the French colony of Guadeloupe, President Macron was forced to ask for help from the Royal Air Force. An RAF C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft flew to Evreux-Fauville Air Base west of Paris and collected 30 tonnes of equipment and supplies including a tipper truck, a digger, and a specialist bulldozer. The RAF aircraft then successfully delivered the urgently-needed supplies to the French colony.

Observations

The EU's defence pretence

The EU has been talking big on defence for years. The bloc’s Commission has clear intentions to become a military power, as we have reported on numerous occasions over recent years. Rejoiners have always ridiculed any idea of “an EU army” but they simply haven’t researched and read the EU’s plans.

In the current NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, the EU has a europhile who tried more than once to take his native Norway into the EU, but the canny Norwegians would have none of it. So when the EU says they simply want to ‘work with’ NATO rather than replace it, Mr Stoltenberg is happy to go along with the pretence.

In reality the EU is a very long way from being a credible military power. Yes, they are spending billions but so far there is little to show for it apart from glossy command and control headquarters and a large number of impressive-looking insignia for a variety of new EU bodies.

The simple fact is that Brexit Britain is defending the EU from its north-east flank down to the Mediterranean, and yet we are unaware of a single word of thanks from the EU Commission’s prodigious propaganda centre in Brussels.

In Part Two of this report we will look at an essential element in this story – one that is never mentioned on the BBC because it does credit to the United Kingdom whilst painting the EU and some of its largest economies in a very poor light.

UK has done well in the support it has given to Ukraine and in meeting the commitment to spend above 2% of GDP on defence. But...
UK defence spending fell from 2.25% to 2.16% of GDP last year at a time when Ukraine was invaded.
This piece conveniently does not include the USA who spend 3.5% of GDP.
This piece also suggests that all UK defence spending is in defence of the EU. It is not, the UK defence spending is spread around the world and is to defend UK interests. Support of Ukraine is in the UK's interests because it threatens Europe and therefore the UK.

Ah but the UK 'spending is around the world' and is to 'defend UK interest's'
Presumably the US spending isn't in the US interests then, and EU members such as France have no interests outside of Europe..

Defending Ukraine is in the EU's interests as well, as Russia has to go through Europe to get to the UK.
As happened in the forties..

Still it's good that you acknowledge that it's the non-EU Anglophone countries doing the heavy lifting again.

The EU's institutions are full to the gunnels with people whose families have a tradition of Collaboration, Communism and Nazism. Maros Sefcovic, Donald Tusk and Martin Selmayr are only the visible tip of the iceberg. The EU will collaborate with whomsoever wins. But we all know who the EU will be rooting for - and it ain't Ukraine.

In 2010 we had 20,000 military personnel based in Germany. Unimaginable the other way around. For many years, we supported the defence of Germany as part of NATO. Since 2010, the trend of British forces defending Europe has changed but we maintain a prominent role in NATO. British military lives were lost in Iraq and Afghanistan in the last decade … not defending the EU.

The mix of forces we maintain in Europe is bound to change as technology and threats change. In one decade land forces may be seen as the most efficient deterrent while a decade later our main contribution could be airpower and land forces might only duplicate what is available locally.
But military forces are for more than fighting wars. They also help to hold political alliances together and make you relevant to other actors. I don't think that AUKUS and the Japanese participation in Tempest would have been put together in quite the same way without the UK showing its willingness to put forces in the Pacific area, And we still don't know what else that will lead to in the form of alliances and partnerships.
As with R&D and technology, it is essential that the UK keeps control, of the defence it pays for. It would be a huge waste of taxpayer money to pay for defence and then let our neighbours establish effective control over it by getting themselves into situations where we had to assist whether it pleased us or not . Let's not forget that one of the original causes of today's Ukraine War was EU diplomatic hastiness over a trade deal.

You honestly think Putin was more concerned with the Ukraine planning to set up a trade agreement with a weak and divided EU … than with Ukraine and NATO signing the Charter on a Distinctive Partnership, which established the NATO-Ukraine Commission (NUC) to take cooperation forward?
