Peers who delayed the Rwanda Bill - and French and EU authorities - might want to reflect

In the early hours of yesterday morning (23 Apr 2024) French police apparently watched 112 of their illegal migrants board a single, clearly-overloaded small boat before tragedy ensued. The subsequent events can only be described as desperately sad.

According to a BBC eye-witness reporter – and we almost never quote the BBC - this all happened only a few hundred yards off the French coast at Wimereux, near Boulogne in northern France.

It took place only a few hours after the Lords finally accepted that their repeated amendments to the Rwanda Bill were clearly never going to be accepted by the people’s elected representatives in the House of Commons, and the Bill was passed after weeks of wrangling.

“J’accuse”

Our heading above comes from the title of an open letter to the French President in 1898 from the French writer Émile Zola. Those who might now feel some responsibility for the death of this young girl and at least four adults yesterday include the following :-

The people smugglers making millions from these people who were perfectly safe on French soil
The parents of this little girl who put her life in peril
President Emmanuel Macron who has refused to take back any of his illegal migrants
EU Commission President von der Leyen who has equally refused a deal
Members of the House of Lords who obstructed the Rwanda Bill until hours before the tragedy
Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour MPs, Ed Davey’s LibDems, and the SNP who all voted against it
Rishi Sunak’s government and past administrations for not taking robust action a long time ago

The simple solution to the illegal boat migrant problem

Illegal migrants will not each pay thousands of euros to people smugglers if they know they will simply be returned to France, or sent to a country such as Rwanda.

In Australia’s case they towed them back or processed them on an island and their illegal boat migrant problem stopped. It was bold, the Australian government was widely condemned in advance by the global ‘elites’, but it worked. Australia has not become a pariah state as a result of its actions.

Emmanuel Macron’s France refuses to take back his illegal migrants. He says this is an EU Commission decision. Ursula von der Leyen and her EU Commission have simply refused to agree a returns deal with the UK.

Unless and until the UK government starts to become assertive with our continental ‘friends’, then the only option we have is Rwanda. Vastly expensive, wholly and unnecessarily complicated, but it’s all we have from Rishi Sunak’s government.

What surely cannot be acceptable is for the events of the early hours of yesterday morning to be repeated.

Rwanda is the only option put forward by this failing government. I still don't see it working. Too many far-left groups with self-appointed power will scupper deportations.
Yvette Cooper has said "Labour will not deport any migrants to Rwanda" With Labour almost certain to be the next government, that will be the end of the whole Rwanda charade.

Can this iisue be resolved from within the ECHR?

Maybe with the amount of parliamentary time, political upheaval, economic concern, housing, crime, personal safety, social unrest and concern about an overall threatening cultural change in the UK, that the immigration issue comes within Article 15.

Yeah remember it well. It has cost the Australian taxpayer hundreds of millions in offshore detention. It was not just turnbacks it was a mixture of turnback put them in disposable life rafts with enough supplies to reach back to Indonesia. Also asylum seekers were offered money to return and the excised offshore islands from migration zone claims.

Even after the last 20 years it is still a problem politicaly with the electorate and it would be a brave Government that abandons offshore detention. Any new arrivals are flown out of the country the same day to Naru.

If the government does not take the sugar off the table the ants will still come. ‘unauthorised maritime arrival’ will continue if drastic action is not taken. These are economic refugees and every one of them who gets in just displace a genuine refugee in a camp from coming to Australia the legal and correct way

The simple solution is to send them all to Sunny South Georgia in the Falklands, without exception, until they decide to go back to where they belong.

I'm heartedly sick of hearing about this pitiful pantomime, for that's what it is, of "The Rwanda Deal" & how it will "stop the boats", whilst the confected outrage of the faux opposition adds to the 'drama' & helps line the pockets of pollies & legal profession at the expense of the ever-suffering taxpayer. It's merely a start, but a pitiful one.
Rwanda 'hopes' to be able to process 1,000 'asylum' requests OVER THE FIVE YEAR PERIOD. More optimistic assessments start at 300 PER YEAR, 'hopefully increasing to 500 pa in time'. In 2020, Rwanda processed 228 asylum applications, and a couple of months ago I read that they'd sold off/allocated the accommodation as nothing was happening.
The prime miniature references 'planes' in the plural. The annual processing is about one planeload, per year, less than one day's known arrivals by dinghy, or is every deportee going to be allocated their own plane? Committing a crime there means deportation to...yes, you've guessed it, back here.
Meanwhile, the 1.47m 'legal' arrivals last year with 1.2m in the preceding 2 years is ignored.
Remove the pull factor - no bennies or accommodation. Intern until deported. If they refuse to say where they're from (& who would want someone like that to be here?), they will be removed to somewhere remote & cold until they remember.
All arriving illegally will never be granted residence & banned from entering the country for life.
As for the French, who are just ridding themselves of their problem, remove a fishing licence for every illegal. The removal of licences would be for increasing periods of time until permanent loss & re-allocated to the British fishing fleet.
If the Govt applied the same vigour with which they removed our rights, within one day, it could be sorted. They have no intention of doing so as they refuse to protect our borders or the people of this country. It's just bread & circuses & they think nobody is noticing...
